Special Diets for Dogs with Mobility Issues

If your dog has some mobility issues, it could be because of arthritis, hip dysplasia, or any other condition. They cause joint pain (boo!)and inflammation that medications can help to manage, but they might also need a special diet. What goes into your pooch’s maw can play a starring role in improving their lives, just like a dog wheelchair.

You want to give them a nutrient-rich diet to manage their weight, keep the joints healthy, and keep inflammation down. Here is some stuff you want for your bet bud:

Lots of meat and protein: Your pup is gonna love a diet that is high in protein, and it can help them. Protein builds muscle to support the joints and helps keep the weight off. Shop around for dog food with a high percentage of chicken or beef and fewer carbs like wheat and corn.

Omega-3 fats: You probably know omega-3 fatty acids are good for you. Turns out it’s also good for your canine clowns. Found in fish oil and other stuff, it can help bring down the swelling and pain.

Low-carb diet: Aside from keeping the weight off, a low-carb diet also keeps the blood sugar levels down for diabetic dogs. Dogs on wheelchairs will also benefit as it keeps the swelling down around the joints.

Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements: Say what? Glucosamine and chondroitin are fancy names for stuff that comes from cartilage. These supplements can support the joint and reduce swelling. Ask your vet if you can add these to your pooch’s diet.

In fact, before you make any big changes in your buddy’s food, ask the vet. You don’t know what could be good or bad for their condition, so it’s always better to look before you leap. The right diet and care can help your disabled dog keep going with a silly smile on their face.
